Summary

The soil is product of the action of parent material, climate, topography, time and organisms associated to the general pedogenic processes of addition, removal, translocation and transformation, which determine its behavior. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize Ultisol in different relief forms in the region of Jaboticabal, State of Sao Paulo. Three trenches were opened in top, back-slope and foothill segments. Morphological description of soil horizons and soil collection for physical, chemical and mineralogical characterization were performed. The physical and chemical properties followed the pattern of exposure of the existing slope segments. The highest degree of crystallinity of iron oxides occurred at the top of the landscape when compared to back-slope and foothill segments. Gibbsite mineralogy was predominant at the top and back-slope segments of the landscape, while kaolinitic mineralogy was predominant at the foothill segment.
